  7.     Students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago are
  8. getting more attention than they expected. The school has hired
  9. a team of consultants who are scheduled to drop in on art
  10. classes and "assess student profiles," which the students
  11. suspect really means taking note of potentially offensive works
  12. in progress. School officials may not want to be burned again
  13. by their students' knack for controversy. In 1988 an exhibition
  14. featuring a portrayal of the late Mayor Harold Washington in
  15. women's underwear prompted enraged aldermen to take the
  16. painting off the wall in protest. A year later, veterans' groups
  17. went ballistic over a student's placing of an American flag
  18. on the floor, which encouraged visitors to traipse across it
  19. as part of the artistic experience. While officials staunchly
  20. defended the right to free expression at the time, the
  21. institute would be happy to avoid a new episode and a possible
  22. drop in public contributions.
